Community Colleges for International Development 2021 Annual Conference: Building the Pipeline- International Student Recruitment at Community Colleges

This session brings together perspectives from both researchers and practitioners that is designed to generate a robust discussion for advocating and building international student recruitment. Our panel will provide insights from the most recent Open Doors data on the international student profile at community colleges, with specific information on the diversity of inbound students and potential growth markets. Using case studies, the session will focus on overcoming challenges of today’s environment to develop an international education strategy and operational processes that can be used to advocate for internationalization and attract a diverse student body. The panel will also explore the importance of building relationships with four-year institutions and U.S. high schools hosting international students, developing student-alumni connections, and leveraging governmental partners, such as EducationUSA and the U.S. Commercial Service, that can assist in the international student recruitment process.

AIEA 2021 Annual Conference: Above the Storm: Priorities and Challenges of the SIO Beyond COVID-19

This panel will present study findings of the realities facing Senior International Officers (SIOs) on U.S. higher education campuses in the post-COVID-19 world. The Institute of International Education (IIE) will present new research studying the position of the Senior International Officer (SIO) at U.S. higher education institutions, the priorities and challenges SIOs face in their work, and the data and research that organizations can provide to better support SIOs and international education efforts. The findings from the mixed-methods study will be complemented by SIOs we interviewed to provide their perspectives on the priorities and challenges that SIOs face, and how they have been able to effectively use resources to further their efforts.

Drawing upon the expertise of international higher education researchers and practitioners in the U.S., this session will offer effective practices and ways that SIOs in the U.S. and abroad can use their own institution’s data and other global sources of research and data to drive decision-making and advocacy for internationalization at their institution. The panel will discuss findings from the SIO study conducted by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in 2020, drawing on data regarding the use and value of data collection and analysis for internationalization efforts. The panel will include an expert in international higher education from IIE’s Open Doors®, as well as an SIO effectively using mobility data to inform internationalization advocacy.

The Washington Diplomat is hosting its 2020 Global Education Conference to convene embassy representatives, the private sector, universities, think tanks, U.S. government officials, international multilateral organizations and other educational institutions to discuss the latest developments in education and, specifically, the issues that are critical to foreign students coming to the United States, particularly in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Among the myriad topics we will examine are: future education trends, including distance learning, the skills needed to adapt to a 21st-century world and pertinent political developments affecting the field of international education. Discussions will be moderated in-studio with virtual participation to ensure a safe but dynamic and inclusive conference.

Open Doors Intensive English Program Data Release

IIE is released the annual Open Doors Intensive English Program (IEP) data on August 20, 2020 via an open webinar. The presentation provided statistics on IEP enrollment, durations, and leading places of origin from the 2019 calendar year. IIE was joined by representatives from EnglishUSA and UCIEP who provided the field with additional insights and how this data can be used by the IEP field.

Perspectives from U.S. Institutions and International Students: Fall 2020 Decisions, Preparations, Complexity

This joint webinar by the College Board and IIE will present new survey findings on the perspectives of U.S. higher education institutions and international students on plans for the academic year 2020/2021. The College Board administered a survey to international students worldwide, asking about their plans for future international study and the reasons behind their decision-making. IIE administered the third survey in its COVID-19 Snapshot Survey Series to U.S. higher education institutions, tracking institutional plans for the next academic year and how this will impact options for international students. The data will be complemented by a discussion with representatives from two U.S. higher education institutions and the decisions and challenges they are facing regarding their international student populations in fall 2020. The complementary views from institutions and international students will provide the necessary context to understand the complex global mobility picture in fall 2020.
